Support Groups for Cancer

Cancer masses and the blood vessels that supply them

By Julie Taylor and Martin Guay

Support groups for cancer are a powerful aid to healing and on HealingRevealed we support and help each other.

Isolation, fear, loneliness and helplessness are a few common feelings that describe the ‘shock of diagnosis’ - of learning that we have cancer.

The burning question here is why?

What causes cancer and why did we get it?

what people never usually talk about

Before I write about what causes cancer, I would like to tell you a little about what people never usually talk about and often don’t know about cancer. This is actually necessary knowledge that helps you truly understand these ideas.

I would like first to try to explain how cancer starts, rather than talk straight away about what causes cancer. Please be patient with me?

There are many kinds of cancer; here I want to talk about the type of cancer that grows as a mass - a tumor.

These types of cancer start with just a few cells that reproduce again and again until the tumor has become a big mass. In the body, each and every cell needs to be fed, including cancer cells. All cells need fresh oxygenated blood to live and multiply.

One of the principles of biology is that each cell is no more than 2-3 cells away from a capillary - a very small vessel that carries blood to feed the cells.

The capillary networks in ‘capillary beds’ are so dense that no living cell is far from its supply of oxygen and food - see diagram.

As more new cells appear, more capillaries are made by the body to feed these new cells - whether they are cancer cells or not. This is the same principle as when life begins in your mother’s womb. As you know, your life started with just 2 cells that reproduced over and over again.

Each of these cells were fed by a capillary. As the organism -or body - grows, it builds veins and arteries capable of feeding an ever-increasing amount of cells.

If you look at this picture below you can see in green the cancer tumor and in purple the blood vessels.

Here’s another picture; you can see in red the cancer tumor and in green the blood vessels.

This principle is the same principle for each organ. Every organ started with just a very few cells and grew until it was big enough to build an independent vein and artery network.

At the risk of repeating myself - a lung has it’s own capillaries, veins and arteries. Kidney have their own. The stomach has it’s own blood supply. The cancer tumor also has it’s own capillaries, veins and arteries - it’s own blood supply - in order to live.

I would love to see support groups for cancer talk about simple facts like these, that we can all understand the physiology of our cancer more clearly?

Another very interesting thing about this blood supply is that these capillaries, veins and arteries that feed the cancer tumor are cancer free. I have never found any cancer in the cancer’s blood vessels (if you know different, please let me know.) To me, this is very strange?

These capillaries, veins and arteries that feed the cancer always seem perfectly healthy. The cancer needs a healthy, reliable food supply. When building some types of cancer tumor, it looks like the body is growing another organ.

Why does this happen? How is such a thing possible? How come the body builds such a perfect and complicated system to feed what it must know is an anomaly of normal growth? Is this cancer tumor another organ? Maybe to start with we should explore the function of an organ?

These are part of the facts that I want to remember to bear in mind when talking about the cause of - and healing - cancer tumor. Different types of cancer have very different causes in Total Biology - as a ‘class’ these types of cancer tumor share a similar pattern of growth and cause.

I look forward to taking this theory one step further in my next article: it’s important to build this knowledge one step at a time.

Till the next time,

Martin
